New Government Systems Analyst “Hopes to Make Life Easier” for the Division

“I’m here to hopefully make your job easier”, Kurtis Michelfelder says, introducing himself to a City of St. Louis Water Division crew as they debate their next move. They have found a leak but are now stymied by numerous parked cars in a busy Central West End neighborhood, the owners of which they have no way to determine.
This is just one of the systemic issues they list for the Peoria-area native turned Government Systems Analyst, a post recently filled by the Water Division. Modernization and communication improvements are also mentioned. Michelfelder quietly listens and nods.
He goes on to compliment them, “What you have been able to accomplish with what you have available is nothing short of amazing.”
The crew members are appreciative of this recognition from the former Bureau of Labor Statistics Senior Field Economist and Valparaiso University graduate who explains his job as finding ways to make systems run smoother and more efficiently.
Back in his office, Michelfelder sighs as he looks at his whiteboard covered with data points and occasional word bursts.
“I’m starting to realize this is something we’ve taken for granted for 40 or 50 years. I never realized how neglected it is nationwide. Utilities are under-appreciated for what they do.”
When asked about his observation regarding crews’ abilities to overcome a lack of systems and tools they need, an optimistic Michelfelder grins. “It’s true though. Now, just wait and see what they can do when we get them more resources!”
